Reader’s theatre actors don’t memorize scripts but read them to the audience while using their voices and upper bodies to convey the roles they are playing. Actors also use vocal and facial expressions, as well as hand and arm movements.

Directed by Karen Moore, the dark farce will be performed in front of microphones with live sound effects. The cast includes former professional and amateur actors, including many faces familiar to the Hendersonville Theatre stage.

From NBC Radio’s Best Plays series, “The Arsenic and Old Lace Radio Show” is a farcical comedy involving Mortimer Brewster, a successful New York newspaper drama critic who discovers that for years his two spinster aunts have been lacing wine with arsenic and giving it to lonely old men. He also has a brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar and a second who received botched plastic surgery and now looks like horror-film actor Boris Karloff. Mortimer must deal not only with his crazy, murderous family but also Brooklyn, New York, police as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves.

Most audiences will recognize the 1939 stage comedy, inspired by a real-life serial killer who ran a nursing home in Connecticut in the 19-teens, from Frank Capra’s classic 1944 movie version starring Cary Grant.

Health and safety are priorities at Hendersonville Theater. All Act2 Players and theatre staff are vaccinated. At this time, mask-wearing is required in the theatre except when eating or drinking.
