Hendersonville Internship Opportunity: 

Front of House/Box Office

Front of House and Box Office Interns will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of how a small theatre company works and will work closely with our entire staff to assist with both the running and maintenance of front of house as well as being the face of the box office through customer service and sales. This position will coordinate with ushers, volunteers, production manager, and stage manager to help maintain the house and patron experience. The Company Manager will provide each intern with training, guidance and professional knowledge. We strive to give our interns rewarding projects and exciting learning experiences. Interns will report to and work with the Company Manager as they work together to make the front of house and box office experience inviting for our patrons. At Hendersonville Theatre, we strive to make our patrons feel like one of the family and we hope that each time they call the box office or walk through the doors for an event they feel special and taken care of. Interns will have the opportunity to work with ticketing systems, learn to build programming into the system, have a strong focus on customer care and relations, will help with the prep and organization of the front of house before, during, and after special events and regular programming, and will assist with various administrative duties.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a self-starter who enjoys seeing a project through to its completion

  • Be open to accepting guidance and training
  • Have an enthusiasm for customer service and the arts; in particular theatre
  • Have customer service or box office experience (a plus, but not required)
  • Owns your own laptop or personal computer

The Commitment: We’re flexible. Stay with us for one or two semesters or for the whole year.  Hours will be coordinated to fit your schedule. Some weekends and evenings will be required for special events and regular programming. Positions will be in person with some possible remote hours. We expect a strong work ethic and high standards of performance. In return, interns are treated as members of the staff and receive valuable hands-on experience. We ask that all interns be dependable, conscientious, and energetic. We work with students on establishing a weekly schedule that works with their classes and other obligations.

Compensation: College credit may be available through your school. Hendersonville Theatre will assist interns in meeting the credit requirements of their school, but all arrangements must be made by the intern. You do not have to be a current student to be considered. An impressive resume-builder. Intern positions are non-paid with no housing or travel stipend.

Production Department

Production Intern will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of how a small theatre company works and will work closely with our Production Manager to assist with production needs and the running of the theatre in many diverse ways. Interns will be taught many facets of the role of the Production Manager, from dealing with administrative issues to hiring and production budgets. Interns will help the PM with scheduling and running meetings, approving the use of the theatre itself, assisting with designers and directors with the actualization of specific sets/props/costumes, and may be asked to help hands-on with the running of certain productions and concerts during their time at HT. Production Interns may be asked to help cover the box office on occasion.

The ideal candidate will:

Costume Design & Costume Shop

Costume Design and Costume Shop Interns will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of how a small theatre company works and will work closely with our Costume Shop Manager and occasionally other staff to assist with the organization and maintenance of the costume shop and workroom. Interns will also have the opportunity to assist with costume design and implementation of designs for any production(s) ongoing at the theatre. The staff will provide each intern with training, guidance and professional knowledge. We strive to give our interns rewarding projects and exciting learning experiences. Projects will include creative organization, inventorying costume pieces and notions, opportunities to build costume pieces from the ground up and utilize any sewing skills where applicable, opportunities for creative input, help oversee the design process in real time through ongoing productions, and learning the basics of costume shop management. 

The ideal candidate will:

Marketing Department

Marketing Interns will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of how a small theatre company works and will work closely with our entire staff to assist with marketing and public relations initiatives.. The staff will provide each intern with training, guidance and professional knowledge. We strive to give our interns rewarding projects and rare and exciting learning experiences. Projects will emphasize digital content creation, marketing strategy & planning, market research, sales analysis, and outreach. The interns are exposed to different aspects of marketing, promotions, advertising, patron loyalty, and public relations. Interns will have the opportunity to work with a real working advertising budget, assist on executing an advertising plan including creation of all ad materials for print & collateral pieces. Internships may also include the opportunity to plan and execute show promotions and outreach events. Additional duties may include updating social media sites, designing Playbills, assisting in distributing marketing materials to local partners within the community, and various administrative duties.

Development Department

The Development Intern will assist in activities related to volunteer management, fundraising and grant writing, community engagement, data entry and reporting, and direct service and advocacy.

The ideal candidate will: 

  • Conduct prospect research on individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Maintain donor and grant databases and files, including calendaring deadlines, logging donations, generating and sending donor acknowledgements, logging donor appreciation efforts
  • Support creation of annual fundraising campaigns
  • Assist staff with grant application writing and tracking
  • Assist staff with researching state and federal regulations regarding donor solicitation (e.g., registration with offices in other states) and general development efforts (e.g., raffles, auctions)
  • Support staff with logistics associated with special events, including assisting with creation of invitation list, all logistics, soliciting sponsors, communicating with venue and vendors
  • Track and evaluate all development efforts
  • Work with the Development Director to implement development strategies
